The Probus Club of Sevenoaks
COMMITTEE NOTICE

Message from Probus Chairman Peter Carpenter

Some years ago the Probus Club of Sevenoaks had over 400 members. Currently we are down to under 200. If the group is to survive it is imperative that we attract new members. This website, from which many people get their initial information, is being updated and we have produced a flier for members to pass on to friends whom they think may be interested in joining.

The Committee has received a number of suggestions as to how we might make our lunch meetings more attractive to newcomers and I have asked a small group comprising the two Lunch Secretaries, the General Secretary, the Treasurer and the next Chairman - Rob Harcourt - to look into a number of possible changes. We would like your opinion on their ideas and you can either give your answers on the note which will be circulated at forthcoming lunches and drop them in to the "post box" which will be on the cashiers' table or send your reply to me by email (petercarpenter10@gmail.com). You can sign or not as you wish. All responses will be considered and the group will collate replies and report to the next Committee meeting which will be in February with the final proposals being announced at the AGM in March and to the March lunches.

The Grace

There have been suggestions that we do away with the Grace. We feel that this could offend some members but consider that it may be acceptable if it were left to the lunch chairman on the day to decide whether to thank "God" or simply say that "we are grateful".

Do you think that we should no longer say Grace?..............................................................Yes/No Would you be happy to leave it to the lunch chairman to decide how to conclude.......................Yes/No

The Loyal Toast

It has been suggested that we should dispense with the Loyal toast but we think, again, that this might offend a number of members. It is difficult for some members to rise in the middle of lunch and we might avoid this problem by proposing the Loyal Toast immediately after the Grace (if there is one).

Do you think that we should dispense with the Loyal Toast?.................................................Yes/No Should we move the Loyal Toast to before lunch before everyone sits down?............................Yes/No

The Table Layout

Our lunch format of top table and three long tables is rather formal and members sometimes feel it is difficult to talk to more than one neighbour. After consultation with our caterers we would like to experiment with different table layouts. This would probably take the form of individual tables with (probably) 8 - seated at both sides and the ends.

Would you be happy for us to experiment with different table layouts?........................................Yes/No

Any Other Ideas

If you have any other ideas about how lunches might be made to be more attractive, especially to new members, please indicate them at the bottom of the note.
