SUMMARY:August lunch
DESCRIPTION:Speaker is Malcolm Wells MBE\, his talk is entitled ” So Far So Good”. \nMalcolm’s talk will cover several subjects starting with light hearted stories of his time at Canine Partners which included working with Sir Terry Wogan and how to teach a dog to use a washing machine.  He will then move on to talking about his 24 years in the army\, as a musician playing the cello on state occasions at Kensington and Buckingham Palace\, one amusing story is when the regimental band played the wrong national anthem.  He then tells of his experience as a medical assistant in the first Gulf war.  He will finish with a “behind the scenes” experience of receiving the MBE at Buckingham Palace including being mistaken for a member of the royal household.  Malcolm’s talk will be both varied and amusing\, do not miss.

SUMMARY:March Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Chairman:  Peter Carpenter\n\n\nSpeaker:  Adrian Phillips “Winston’s Bandits.”  Adrian’s talk is based on his recent book of the same title. Churchill was a warm and emotional man who needed the support of friends and family. Through his wilderness years when he battled to rearm Britain against Hitler\, a small handful of individuals gave him that backing.  The story of these friendships adds an unfamiliar dimension to the story of Churchill as a towering unique figure in history.

SUMMARY:March Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Chairman: Lynton Jones\n\nSpeaker:  Chris McCooney “Smuggling on the South Coast.”  His talk traces the violent heyday of the contraband trade that came in the 18th century when heavy taxes on tobacco\, tea\, brandy and gin made the illegal importation of these supposed luxuries highly profitable.  The second half of the talk is devoted to the notorious Hawkhurst Gang and dispels many misconceptions; the smugglers were not “honest thieves” but outlaws who protected their infamous trafficking by resorting to wholesale corruption\, terrorism\, and murder.
