SUMMARY:July Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Speaker – Steve Bird “Zulu”.  We’ve all watched the film a thousand times on TV\, but what really happened and how true to life  (or not)  were the characters portrayed in the film?  What happened to them after the battle?  And turning to the film\, how did that come to be made in the way it was?   All these questions come with fascinating answers.  Steve has spoken to us on several occasions in the past\, his talks are always entertaining and well received.

SUMMARY:March Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Chairman:  Peter Carpenter\n\n\nSpeaker:  Adrian Phillips “Winston’s Bandits.”  Adrian’s talk is based on his recent book of the same title. Churchill was a warm and emotional man who needed the support of friends and family. Through his wilderness years when he battled to rearm Britain against Hitler\, a small handful of individuals gave him that backing.  The story of these friendships adds an unfamiliar dimension to the story of Churchill as a towering unique figure in history.

SUMMARY:March Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Chairman: Lynton Jones\n\nSpeaker:  Chris McCooney “Smuggling on the South Coast.”  His talk traces the violent heyday of the contraband trade that came in the 18th century when heavy taxes on tobacco\, tea\, brandy and gin made the illegal importation of these supposed luxuries highly profitable.  The second half of the talk is devoted to the notorious Hawkhurst Gang and dispels many misconceptions; the smugglers were not “honest thieves” but outlaws who protected their infamous trafficking by resorting to wholesale corruption\, terrorism\, and murder.

SUMMARY:Christmas Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Chairman: Nigel Jepps \n  \n  \nSpeaker:  Andy Thomas\, “Christmas – a festival history” \nAndy will present a fascinating and uplifting presentation uncovering the long and intriguing background to the festive season.  From the ancient celebration of light in the winter darkness\, to the marking of the birth of a messiah\, mid December has long been a time of rituals and rejoicing.  Yet the history of Christmas has not been straightforward; its celebration was banned in Puritan times before Victorians rehabilitated the festival into what it has now become.  Andy shows how\, for all the modern commercialisation\, we can still find meaning in Christmas today and keep the flame alive in the winter darkness.
