SUMMARY:Christmas Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Chairman: Nigel Jepps \n  \n  \nSpeaker:  Andy Thomas\, “Christmas – a festival history” \nAndy will present a fascinating and uplifting presentation uncovering the long and intriguing background to the festive season.  From the ancient celebration of light in the winter darkness\, to the marking of the birth of a messiah\, mid December has long been a time of rituals and rejoicing.  Yet the history of Christmas has not been straightforward; its celebration was banned in Puritan times before Victorians rehabilitated the festival into what it has now become.  Andy shows how\, for all the modern commercialisation\, we can still find meaning in Christmas today and keep the flame alive in the winter darkness.

DESCRIPTION:Chairman: Rob Harcourt \n  \n  \nSpeaker:  Steve Bird “The Home Guard”. Steve is no stranger to Sevenoaks Probus having given three talks already and\, because they have all been well received\, we have invited him back to give yet another one. SUMMARY:Monday Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Chairman: Peter Thompson \nSpeakers: Geoff Gyte and Stan Williams who both have degrees in Chemistry.  In retirement after successful careers they both joined the Sevenoaks U3A Cosmology Group and their talk is entitled\,  “Ripples in the Universe”. \nEinstein predicted there would be Ripples in Space caused by Gravitational Waves resulting from bodies orbiting each other.  But he thought these would be too tiny to ever be observable. Amazingly though\, an exciting new technology has been developed\, which in 2015 witnessed these waves for the first time.  As a result a new branch of telescopy is now being developed through which we are able to look back and ‘see’ for the first time these previously invisible waves\, which reveal the ginormous events that have shaped the Universe.
