SUMMARY:July Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Speaker – Steve Bird “Zulu”.  We’ve all watched the film a thousand times on TV\, but what really happened and how true to life  (or not)  were the characters portrayed in the film?  What happened to them after the battle?  And turning to the film\, how did that come to be made in the way it was?   All these questions come with fascinating answers.  Steve has spoken to us on several occasions in the past\, his talks are always entertaining and well received.

SUMMARY:June Walk
DESCRIPTION:Terry Synnott has kindly offered to lead a Probus walk in June. The pub chosen actually serves food on a Tuesday\, so I would like to see if there is increased interest in walking on that day. \n\n June’s walk is on Tuesday 17th June\, starting from the Plough & Barn. Leigh Rd. Hildenborough\, Tonbridge\, TN11 9AJ at the usual time of 1015. The Plough has a very large car park. The walk is a 4 mile loop taking us cross-country to the outskirts of Leigh and then back along the Medway. The route is as flat as they come and if there are any stiles they are modest. Being the Medway Valley\, the soil underfoot is clay\, rock hard at the moment\, of course\, but sticks to boots like anything if wet so it would be sensible to have a change of footwear available if required.\nAs usual\, a table has been booked for 8\, as an aiming shot. Helpful if you let Terry Synnott –  terry@synnottfamily.com – know intentions in good time so this can be adjusted as necessary.

SUMMARY:June Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Chairman:   Peter Thompson \n  \nSpeaker:  Chris Levett on:  “What happened to the English Hop Industry?” \nChris’s talk relates to the origins and history of hops\, the great tales and unique traditions of the English industry\, and of those treasured memories that will soon be confined to history. He will tell tales of the thousands of Londoners who came down every year to pick hops by hand and the appalling conditions in which they worked and lived in. He will also tell of why Oast Houses are round and some square and give an insight as to why Kent was known as the “Garden of Eden”. A not to be missed insight into our local history of a bygone age.

DESCRIPTION:Chairman:  Peter Carpenter\n\n\nSpeaker:  Adrian Phillips “Winston’s Bandits.”  Adrian’s talk is based on his recent book of the same title. Churchill was a warm and emotional man who needed the support of friends and family. Through his wilderness years when he battled to rearm Britain against Hitler\, a small handful of individuals gave him that backing.  The story of these friendships adds an unfamiliar dimension to the story of Churchill as a towering unique figure in history.
